Chiropractic Care in Pawleys Island, SC

Restoring normal motion to the joints of your spine, so the nerves running through them stop being irritated.

Care Built Around You

Personalized Chiropractic Care

When a spinal joint loses its normal range of motion, the surrounding muscles tighten and the nerve exiting at that level can become irritated. A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled movement that restores motion to that specific segment.

The skill is in knowing exactly which segment is restricted and in which direction, which is what the examination and digital X-rays establish. Dr. Fico has been doing this on the Grand Strand for nearly 30 years and examines every new patient personally.

How We Adjust

Techniques Used At Strand Spine Institute

There is no single correct way to adjust a spine. Dr. Fico is trained in several methods and chooses between them based on what your examination shows, your age, your bone density and what you are comfortable with. If one approach is not right for you, another usually is.

Diversified

The most widely used adjusting method. A quick, shallow, precisely directed thrust delivered by hand to restore motion to a specific joint. Often the first approach for a healthy adult spine.

Gonstead

An expanded, more analytical form of Diversified. Digital X-rays and instrument readings are used to pinpoint the exact segment and direction before anything is adjusted, which suits complex or long-standing cases.

Thompson Drop

Uses a table with segments that drop a fraction of an inch as the adjustment is made. The table does much of the work, so far less manual force is needed. Comfortable for patients who dislike traditional adjusting.

ArthroStim Instrument

A handheld instrument that delivers a rapid series of very light impulses instead of one thrust. No twisting and no audible pop, which makes it well suited to seniors, patients with osteoporosis, and children.

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)

Uses padded wedges placed under the pelvis so your own body weight gradually corrects the alignment between the sacrum and the base of the skull. Among the gentlest methods available.

Flexion and Low-Force Methods

Slow, controlled movement used where a disc is involved or where a joint is too irritated for a direct adjustment. Frequently paired with DRX9000 decompression or Summus laser therapy.

Tell Dr. Fico at your report of findings if you have a preference or a technique you would rather avoid. Nothing is done without you knowing what it is and why.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Most patients describe it as a quick pressure followed by relief. The audible pop is gas releasing from the joint, not bones “cracking.” If you are anxious about it, tell Dr. Fico. Low-force instrument techniques achieve a similar result without the sensation.

It depends entirely on what is found. Some patients need a handful of visits, while long-standing structural problems take longer. Dr. Fico gives you a specific answer at your report of findings, before you commit to anything.

No. Chiropractors are primary contact providers in South Carolina, so you can book directly. If your condition needs medical co-management we will coordinate with your physician.

Yes, with appropriate technique. Bone density, prior surgeries and medication all influence the approach, which is part of why the examination and X-rays come first.
